Coaching our rec league is one of the very best jobs in the KMYSA system. You are helping young kids grow in their love of a great game. We are always in need of coaches; however we know that some parents/relatives/generally nice people that want to help have not grown up with the sport and might be intimidated in regards to coaching.
Let us clarify, we are not looking for experts. We are looking for people that are willing to give a bit of their time and provide a little direction and sportsman leadership.
Any registered and utilized coach will be offered free tuition for one child (or designate) during this season and following seasons. This fee subtraction will be applied after teams are formed and coaches are set. If there is an outstanding balance, an amount equal to one rec fee will be subtracted from that balance. If there is no outstanding balance, a credit will be applied to the account.
We have four different rec age groupings and coaching is a bit different for each age group:
1. PreK/K groups: 45mins long (6-6:45p). The first 20mins is having the kids play a couple of ten minute games. Ideas are listed below. Basically we start to get them to find spaces in the field and get used to touching the ball. The last 20mins (or so) is playing a fun scrimmage against another PreK/K team. Schedules are set up by KMYSA. You will be assigned a half field each day. The other half will have the team that your team will eventually play.
2. 1st/2nd grade group: 1hr long (6:45-7:45p). Similar to the PreK/K groups. First 30 minutes is playing a couple of games that are very similar to the PreK/K teams. Normally the skills do not evolve a lot. The last 30 minutes are playing a fun scrimmage game against the team sharing your field.
3. 3rd/4th grade group: 1hr long (6-7p). This is where things change a bit. Your team will either have a practice or game. The schedule will rotate so that there are variations in who you play. Skill levels have evolved a bit by this point. Feel free to adjust practice games as you see fit. You're still welcome to play a scrimmage against the team that you share the field with so long as coaches are in agreement.
4. 5th/6th grade group: 1hr long (7-8p). Currently we are running a 'free play' format. Meaning that we don't organize into teams based mostly on the amount of registrations. The coach has total choice of how to run the day. Whether it is total practice games or throw some pennies on half the squad and scrimmage.
